Study of the Academic Stress of Students in the Dept. of Optometry

Abstract
Purpose: This study aims to understand the academic stress of students in the Dept. of Optometry and to analyze the impact of the academic stress on the academic emotions through an analysis of their academic emotions.

Methods: A comparative analysis was conducted with 192 copies of a survey on academic stress and academic emotions conducted with students enrolled in a three-year course of the Dept. of Optometry. For academic stress, the subjects were classified into a high-risk group (>130 points), a potential-risk group(80-129 points) and a health group(< 80 points) to analyze them according to the level of their academic stress, and statistical software, SPSS18.0was used for the analysis.

Results: Of academic stress, test stress was 3.05; study stress, 2.78; class stress, 2.69; and school record stress, 2.61. Of them, test stress showed the highest value. Of negative emotions in academic emotions, boredom was 3.18; anger, 2.61; and anxiety, 3.11 while of positive emotions, pleasure was 2.87; hope, 3.22; and pride, 3.25. Boredom showed the highest academic emotion of negative emotions while pride showed the highest academic emotion of positive emotions.

Conclusions: Students in the Dept. of Optometry had the highest test stress and showed the highest value of academic emotion in boredom and pride. The high-risk group showed the highest value of test stress in the level of academic stress and the highest value of boredom, anger and anxiety in negative emotions while it showed the highest value of hope in positive emotions, which showed a significant difference. The higher the students¡¯ academic stress, the higher their negative emotion became, so it is judged that guidance and interest in college life at their eye level would be
needed.
